Joint Function and range of movement checks
A joint function & range of movement check can be carried out as part of a tailored sports performance analysis assessment. You will be contacted via phone before your appointment to discuss your needs.
A mobile union between two bones forms an articulation which is supported by ligaments and connective tissues. Movement is brought about by muscles contracting and is facilitated by the shape of the bone ends, articular cartilage and sometimes fibrocartilage. Understanding how each of these functions appropriately allows us to assess the extent of movements through specified planes against accepted norms.
There are many factors which can affect the ‘integrity’, or normal functioning of a joint:
- Previous injuries may have led to permanent damage of bones or articular cartilage.
- Ligaments may have been torn or stretched and can no longer hold a joint stable as they should.
- Tendons may have been inflamed or ruptured causing long-term changes in the structure of the tissue, leading to poorer qualities of the tissue itself.
- Muscles may have been affected by different injury types that may have impaired the ability of the muscle to contract and create force, or the timing of the contraction, leading to uncoordinated movement patterns that may not be immediately obvious to the person.
During your joint function & range of movement check, an accomplished practitioner with a comprehensive knowledge of functional anatomy and all major joints will be able to accurately assess and determine where any impediments to normal function, joint range and muscular control exist. By selecting the correct therapeutic interventions and correctional exercises, such impediments may be reversed.
